French Faux
What are some French faux pas? (specifically asked towards people living in France)?
I am going on a study abroad program through my private college and will be living in France for 3 months. I would tres much appreciate it if I knew what not do while living in that glorious country.
Cabal has some good stuff in there
In addition :
Don’t get drunk, it’s frowned upon even among young people in France (much more so than in the UK for example)
Don’t go on about how the French always surrender…it’s not actually true and will annoy them
Make some effort to speak at least a bit of French when for example ordering in bars. You’ll be much better seen (and served) by the staff. Certainly don’t assume everyone speaks English.
When you are paying cash in a shop or tobacconists for example, you’ll find the cashier often won’t put out their hand for the money: in which case put the money in front of them onthe counter. Even if you hold out your hand for the change they will often ignore this and put your change on the counter. It’s not an insult, just how they do things.
When in the Metro (underground); of you’re seated in the fold away seats and a lot of people get on, stand up! (I’ve seen lots of Americans being argued at because they remain seated..)
Hope that helps
