Rear shock hanger welding job?
While getting my muffler replaced, the mechanic saw that my shocks needed to be replaced. When taking off one of the rear shocks, one of the top hangers (where the bolt is) came off. He said that it needed to be welded on, but he wants me to give him an offer of how much. I have no idea how much it would cost to weld this piece and I do not want to rip him off. I also cannot afford to be ripped off from this. I can put on the shocks myself, so I won’t be paying for shock installation or anything. His shop rate is $40/hour of labor. Any estimates?
It’s a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I know the shocks need to be replaced as they look like they are the originals.
I know the guy on a personal level and I know he’ll do a good job, I just wasn’t sure how much it would actually cost to do this. From the sounds of it, it sounds like it would be cheap. Thanks!
I’d say $20, since you know the guy personally.
I work as a welder and sometime weld inspector.
Under ideal circumstances it would not take me more than 1/2 hour to do something like this, probably less than 15 mins.
It sounds like the weld was bad when it came from the factory, I wish I could say this wasn’t common in Chrysler/Jeep products. Ask the guy to grind out the original bad weld before he lays down a new one. This is a safety precaution. Suspension parts are not something you want to screw around with…..
