Can a military tank withstand a lightning bolt?
I mean a military tank (like a M1 Abrams), will the tank be destroyed by the lightning bolt? Will its crew survive?
Of course it will survive… the metal conducts the energy down to the ground. The crew is shielded by Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Plastic, and typically modern mesh protected CFRP subjected to a 200 hundred thousand amp pulse lasting 50 microseconds looses mesh over a 10 sq-inch area and delaminates/cooks a couple of plies beneath the damage. It’s a matter of repairs.
The ammunition is shielded also… so unless you have a round up and in the breach, it won’t cook off. Even if it DOES, the M1 and almost all current MBTs are built so the ammo will blow OUT away from the crew and body of the tank.
ALL the electronics will be protected by grounding straps and shielding.
