Snail Night

new apple snail…night time scavenger?
Ok, so yesterday I was in petco getting a freshwater master test kit because I hate the strips. But I saw these gold Inca snails and they were beautiful and cheap. I got one and I put it in my 10 gallon and I plan on moving it to a bigger tank when its cycled. But I put it on one corner of the tank and it didn’t move. I turned on the light this morning and its on the complete opposite side of the tank and the lil piece of algae wafer I put in at night is gone. With I ever see this thing move?-_____-
Apple snails (also known as mystery snails) are quite interesting little characters. I own a gold one myself! They are nocturnal, but sometimes you will seem them roaming around during the early night. Snails in general are known to sleep for long periods of time.
My snail personally loves to sleep for hours, then stick his head into the algae wafer for 10 minutes, then crawl back to sleep. Just make sure you have dark hiding places for them to sleep!! Snails are pretty hardy and will survive during the cycling process. And a 10 gallon tank is way more room then he requires, so he’ll be a happy little critter.
If you eventually want to get another snail you’ll need to find out his gender. Apple snails, unlike other snails, are not asexual. The easiest way I’ve noticed is to pick him up and hold him on his back. Once he comes out of his shell, if you see a ‘bump’ under his shell on your left (his right), then he’s a male, if you do not, he’s a female. There are some pictures online that can point this out to you! By the way, snails can last for weeks without being under water, as long as they are in a damp place. They have both a lung and gills for this. But I wouldn’t advice placing him above water much, probably just to check his gender!
I hope I helped!
